Matthew Alley is a music instructor, guitarist, and ethnomusicologist. Born and raised in South
Carolina, he began his musical career performing around the Carolinas before relocating to the
Midwest. Matthew holds a BM in Music Performance from Winthrop University, an MM in
Jazz Studies from the University of South Carolina, and an MA in Ethnomusicology from
Indiana University. As a guitarist and bass guitarist, Matthew has performed with many groups
in a variety of styles, having played blues, classical, country, funk, jazz, and rock. He writes and
records original music and plays regularly in the Chicago area. Matthew is always willing and able to play at your event, no matter what style of music you would like to hear. Additionally, he has taught private lessons, group classes, and college courses.
Loving all kinds of music is key to Matthew’s approach to teaching guitar. He takes students’
musical interests as the starting point for guitar lessons, designing a course of study to help them
achieve their personal goals while building musical and technical fundamentals that can be
transferred to any genre. He knows that there are as many types of learners as there are styles of
music, and is eager to help students understand their instruments and musical personalities.
